 Holy Family— December 28st, 2008  Year B

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Christmas was a great celebration.  It was very inspiring to see so many people filling the church  for all the Masses and to share the joy of Christmas with each other.  Your were very generous again and we will be able to pat a large instalment off the loan on the church.  Thank you and congratulations.

Fr. Glen and I would like to thank you also for your kindness and generosity to us and your very encouraging comments and wishes.  It  is very heartening to receive such positive feedback.  We are most grateful.  We would like to wish everyone a very happy New Year and pray that God will bless you and your families abundantly.

This weekend ELLIOTT McKIMM is to be received into the Catholic Church by Fr Glen at the 9.30am Mass. Elliott is a school teacher and is soon to be married to his fiancé, Kathleen Hennessy. We congratulate and warmly welcome Elliott into the Catholic Church.

Next week we will return to the normal Mass timetable.

Today’s Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of  Jesus to all humanity, whereas Christmas celebrates the coming of Jesus to Israel. I read during the week that in some countries Epiphany is seen as more important that Christmas.  For them Epiphany is the time for gift giving, based on the gifts of the magi.

In a country like Australia, Epiphany is a celebration of God’s call to us to form one family, without losing our traditions - unity enriched with diversity.  Acceptance and tolerance flourish in such an atmosphere of respect.

Epiphany invites us:

to be open to all people putting aside prejudices and stereotypes;

to welcome the Jesus who came for everyone and who was welcomed at his birth by representatives of different nations and races; to welcome mystery—the reality of life that surrounds us but which usually escapes our full understanding; to be open to the possibility “of returning by a different way” after meeting Jesus Christ.

In Christ,

                                                                                  Kerry.

Recently Deceased: Alphonsus Duffy, Margaret Breen, Rhonda Shallala, Rita Kidd, Thomas Payne, Margaret Sheehan, Angelina Lo Monaco.

Anniversaries:  Chong Soo Kim, John Earley, Shirley Dun worth, Mary Munslow, Manuel Montenegro, Snr., Joseph Macri.

Also:  Jean & Martin Llayden,  Helena Ludwig Bucek, Veronica John Sorbell, Elva Mowle, Harvey Gillman, Lynn Stabback, Mary and Joseph Bigeni, Oriente & Maria Simoneschi, Giuseppe & Carmela Zappia, Harry Newton, Dorothy & Thomas McCabe,  and the souls of  the faithful departed.

May they rest in peace.

Baptism

This week we welcome into our church family through the waters of Baptism Tahli Christensen and Mateus Lima. Through their Baptism we pray that they  will love and serve the Lord always.

In a Nutshell.

Jesus is recognised by wise men who come from a far country.  They have relied on the guidance of a new star in the heavens, and are convinced that they need to follow this star, even though it leads them on a path that they do not know.  Their faith, and ours, will finally lead us all to Jesus, who is king of all the nations of the world.

From darkness to light

Keep the lamps of your souls ever burning, and let no darkness dwell in your hearts, for, as the Apostle says, ‘once you were darkness but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of the light.’ Make real in yourselves what you see in the figures of the Magi, and ‘thus let your light shine before men, so that seeing your good deeds, they may glorify your heavenly Father.’

St. Leo the Great (c. 400-461)

Wonderful epiphany!

World Youth Day was like nothing I had ever experienced before.  In this gathering of the nations, we saw the dawning brightness of the youthful face of the Church, alive with the Spirit and manifesting the gracefulness of the Lord to a modern, secular city.  The whole city of Sydney was transformed into a place of joy and peace.  I suspect that hearts hardened against the event were, even if only temporarily, moved by this wonderful epiphany! Each of us went back to our own country, our own place in a different way! (Gerard)

When I was about seven or eight years old, growing up as a Protestant in Northern Ireland, I remember sneaking into the Catholic church just up the road from where I lived.  I was curious about the ‘different papists or Fenians as they were called.  My most vivid memory of the church is always finding it filled with light, more light than came just from the candles in the Lady Chapel.  I have hung onto this memory throughout my life when times were rough. (Lynette)

THE JESSE TREE

“So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.” Matthew 1:17

The Jesse Tree is a symbol of Jesus’ family tree.  The names of each generation, from Abraham to Jesus Christ, and symbols  which reflect many known biblical stories in the Old and New Testament have been placed on the Jesse Tree in the Foyer. Can you recognise them?
